The Pet Shop
The organisation Arches Local tells a variety of local stories, with each muralist choosing one to bring Chatham's history closer to the people. Well, this one is a little more unusual: From 1953 until 1961, 417-419 High Street was home to a pet store fittingly named 'The pet shop'. The previous owner had a rare Humboldt woolly monkey that would climb and leap across the shop.
Then, quite suddenly, the shop owner, along with his family, set sail from Chatham to the Amazon in search of more Humboldt monkeys, hoping to sell them to zoos eager to pay top prices. By late 1961, no news had surfaced about their journey, and to this day, the outcome of their voyage remains unknown.
